We have a great summer volunteer opportunity for students currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade – especially those with an interest in the healthcare field.

Our Summer Teen Volunteer Program at OU Medical Center allows students to gain experience working in a hospital environment. Teens select 9 or more days during the summer they want to volunteer, and each day they volunteer we keep them busy from 8:30am until 4pm. Teens work in pairs doing a variety of tasks around the hospital, including information desk, coffee cart, patient rounding, popcorn/cookie sales, and department support. We also have at least 2 Lunch & Learn opportunities, a day trip to a camp for kids with life threatening or terminal illnesses, a fun trip, and an awards dinner. Teens will primarily interact with adult patients, though some child interaction always occurs.

Dues are only $10, which will cover pretty much everything other than spending money on our trips. Each day a Teen volunteers, they get a $7.50 credit in our cafeteria to buy what they like, so we cover lunch.

This program does have a limited number of spots each summer, and we end up turning away a lot of otherwise excellent candidates. We are working to expand our opportunities so we can include more Teens. Your best candidates will be able to share a wealth of volunteer experience they already have. Teens selected for the program will need to pass a drug screening (requiring a trip to Concentra), background check, and health screening (which may be able to be conducted locally). There will be a full-day orientation the Friday before the start of the program.

I realize that for many of you, Oklahoma City may be far away. However, I want to make sure we have the opportunity to offer this experience to as many Teens as we can. Some may find themselves in OKC for some or all of the summer, in which case this becomes more feasible. I’ve had volunteers from Atoka, Tecumseh, and even McAlister who were able to make the trip.

Applications are available at http://www.oumcvols.org, and are due no later than April 15.

If I can answer any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks in advance for helping to spread the word of this program to interested students.
